Greystoke Mahale is built almost entirely from reclaimed dhow wood and local materials, sitting directly on a Lake Tanganyika beach that would look at home in the Caribbean if it weren’t backed by dense rainforest. Six bandas, open to the lake breeze, with no real walls to speak of. The main draw is chimpanzee trekking into the Mahale range behind camp, but afternoons on the lake — swimming, kayaking, sundowners on the beach — are just as much the point.
